Chapter V
Cairo
I awakened to the smell of breakfast. I looked around the bedroom to see that the bed was fixed perfectly on Maria’s side, which was odd but I did not want to complain due to the argument we’d had last night. I slowly rose up from the bed, rubbing my eyes before I made my way into the kitchen to see Maria making a breakfast of pancakes, sausage.
“Hey, you’re finally up!” Maria said with a small cup of the coffee she’d poured a second ago.
I looked at her for a moment. I didn’t mind her cooking, but I wanted to see where her head was at before I began to eat. I’d seen this in too many movies.
“Because I realized yesterday I was acting bitchy… Look, baby, I just want us to get along like we used to do… You’re changing!” Maria stated.
“Yeah, I’m not changing but…. I won’t lie. I want us back like it was, shawty, and you know I don’t know much about love. Love is not for me. You can’t expect me to be all considerate of your feelings,” I replied, picking her chin up when she wiped her tears away quickly.
“I don’t expect much. It’s just when you started to act different because of money, and money is not material in our relationship. We supposed to be focus on each other,” she said, flipping the pancakes on the other side.
“I never acted different and never will. You have been acting different since I first gave you the money. But you know what? I don’t want to talk or argue about this because that is what we are about to do. Anyway, what are you doing today?” I asked her forcefully, changing the subject before I sat down and enjoyed my coffee.
“Well, I am going to go see my mom then I will meet you at the BBQ... That’s okay?” Maria questioned me before stirring the eggs again with a smile.
“Wait, what BBQ?” I asked, thinking hard on what BBQ she was talking about, but there was no BBQ I could think of.
“Did you forget? It‘s your friend Smoke’s BBQ he throwing,” Maria replied before looking over at me as I nodded my head before cracking a smile.
“A lot happened yesterday. Where and what time, though?” I questioned, grabbing my plate of breakfast before I looked down at my phone, noticing Smoke was calling me a few moments ago.
“What’s up, man are you coming?” Smoke asked over the music in the background, as if the BBQ was starting already.
“Hell yeah, no business today. Why not… I’ll be there in a minute,” I said, throwing my trash away. I wanted to show my friends that I was appreciative of them.
“I’ll meet you at Smoke’s house around three, okay?” Maria said when I hung up the phone with Smoke.
I looked at her, wondering if she should come. I didn’t want no drama but I wanted her to feel welcome even if she was not. Before I could say my answer, she left out to visit her parents.
